Lavinia
Our project is based on Super Mario, Created mood boards to help our research as we are creating our own sprites by 16 x 16 pixels as we think that would be the right size. We will sketch out our sprites first then work on them digitally to make sure they look right.
First I was looking at Super Mario, Just looking at all the different type of movements he has, and looking at different sprites.
I was searching Super Mario pixel form, this is the style me and Ryan will be going for, designing it pixel by pixel on illustrator so nothing will be out of place.
I then looked at different backgrounds of Super Mario games, This will help me and Ryan decide on what the background will look like, whether it will be like Super Mario's background or have our own image of Derry city or armagh for example.
I looked up all the other sprites in the Super Mario games, for example the coins, enemies, other icons, to see what they look like and what me and Ryan can recreate for our video, to make it our own.
I gathered more images of sprites just to have a closer look at them, at the shape and colour schemes. Looking at the different scales of sprites form.
Here I got a background image and put some sprites in it, to give me and Ryan a view point of what it will look like.

As our project is based upon the Super Mario game some research needed to be done to see how the different sprites are drawn and coloured. Drawing the sprites 16x16 pixels could be difficult to do depending on the shape we want to use. Ruled paper will be needed to draw the sprites and will make things easier when going to create them digitally. Setting up grids on Illustrator will be useful aswell. Everything will need to be drawn pixel by pixel and nothing out of place as this will make the sprite look funny.
I came across the game Kickle Cubicle for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) which 16x16 pixel sprites as fruit and vegetables. This is very good and should help with designing my own.
As well as the different characters in the games I also looked at the different objects that make up the levels. We could use these or create our own to use for the video. I looked at a mixture of the SNES and NES games.
We are going to use Mario in our video so it was important to get the sprites of his different movements. These can be redrawn or cut out to use in our video.
A background will also be important with our video. I looked at some of the games backgrounds and noticed that some have a repetitive pattern with the shapes and objects. With our background being based on Derry / Armagh area we could use a repetitive style or Pixel based design.
As I will be creating my own sprites I thought it would be good to look at all the different enemies from the Super Mario Bros 3 games. Sprites could be based upon some of these or be drawn completely different. Some could also be recreated and changed depending on what route we decide to go.
As we will be designing an entire level for Mario to run through I felt it was good to look at an entire level and recreate my own on illustrator using the different objects within the games, Currently there is a game called Super Mario Maker which would do this for me but myself or Lavinia doesn't have it which is a shame as it would help a lot with the timing,
